The servers cannae take it…

January 31, 2010

So, it’s been a rather shaky first weekend for Star Trek: Online. Several periods of ‘unexpected downtime’ (ie, server crashes), and now it looks like Cryptic have either switched on their queuing system for the first time or significantly reduced the maximum number of players allowed on the server. Or possibly both.

It’s probably not a huge surprise to anyone who played in the open beta, as it was all too clear that the game was a long way from being ready for launch, but disappointing nonetheless.

On the bright side, it does give me some time to work on the first article for The Engines Cannae Take It!, a basic overview of the STO character and progression system. If all goes well, it should be up later today or sometime tomorrow.

Engage!

The website and boards are back up, and after a couple of tries I’ve managed to connect to the login server, and past ‘retrieving list of characters’.

Looking okay so far, then, if a little sluggish to respond (hardly surprising given the number of people who are probably trying to connect right now).

Helm not responding, sir

5 minutes until the headstart for pre-order customers is due to begin, and the Cryptic website and forums are down for maintenance… Is it going to be a shaky start for Star Trek: Online?
